Post-doctoral scientist in plant genetics and biochemistry
We have a funded opening in Strasbourg for a plant biologist/geneticist post-doctoral fellow to work on the functional analysis of plant overgrowth phenotypes in the context of isoprenoid homeostasis and signaling.
The ultimate goal of our research group is to define key factors or master switches that maintain isoprenoid homeostasis throughout the plant lifespan. Candidates very keen to tackle a biological question where at the end all is about growth and yield and its control by a major metabolic pathway are welcome to grow the team’s capacity in genomics.
The successful candidate will develop the following main activities:
- barley forward genetics, analysis of selected traits caused by induced mutations in barley as a model plant for small-grained cereals
- generate and analyze recombinant mapping populations using NGS pipelines
- identify causative alleles of overgrowth phenotypes in specific hormone signaling or isoprenoid mutants
- participate in ongoing gene functional characterization in Arabidopsis isoprenoid mutants
- implement genome editing techniques
- publish experimental results and present work at national or international conferences
Then successful candidate will have a proven expertise in:
- genomics and bioinformatics (like for instance high throughput sequencing techniques, bulk segregant analysis, exome capture, ..)
- plant molecular biology (the essential of standard methods) and in some of the following scientific and technical areas especially:
- plant genetics and breeding
- leaf biology
- analytical biochemistry (plant-based or yeast-based heterologous gene expression systems)
- metabolomics
The successful candidate will work with a high degree of autonomy and in interaction with in-house technical platforms especially dedicated to greenhouse management and growth chambers facilities, microscopy and cellular imaging, sequencing and gene expression analysis, and plant imaging and mass spectrometry. She/he will also demonstrate skills in critical thinking and writing skills for research dissemination.
The hired postdoctoral fellow will work under the supervision of Hubert Schaller, team leader, Plant Isoprenoid Biology group, at the IBMP (Institut de Biologie Moléculaire des Plantes, CNRS) headed by Laurence Drouard. The scientific environment of the IBMP is dynamic and rewarding as the research activity of the institute is broad and allows synergistic interactions between the research groups by bringing together complementary expertise in fundamental plant biology with the goal of answering some of the major challenges in health and environment. The institute offers training and supervision within the hosting teams for Master and PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers. Since the IBMP is part of the Strasbourg
University campus, successful applicants will benefit from all the university academic and social facilities such as libraries and activities proposed by the work council. The hosting team has access to sufficient lab, greenhouse (and assistance provided by a team of four professional gardeners) and office space. As a CNRS employee, the hired postdoctoral fellow will have full access to all CNRS thematic training sessions offered to employees, not only in Strasbourg but also elsewhere in France, in order to learn novel aspects of experimental biology and science, communication and management that will be beneficial for a career development.
